Are Skip Contents Recycled?
Here at DP Skip Hire, we understand the importance of recycling and our corporate responsibility as a waste management company to protect our planet. In order to back this up, we have worked hard to offer a variety of services that will help us to meet our zero landfill policy. In order to explain our services in more detail and why we can be trusted to make use of your waste, we’ve put together the following guide.
Do You Recycle Skip Contents?
As a part of our vision and mission for the future, we are committed to ensure that all of our waste is diverted to other uses rather than going to landfill. At the moment, 90% of the waste that’s brought into our depot is fully recycled and repurposed, which is something that we’re incredibly proud of. However, we’re still striving to be better.
The team at DP Skip Hire are strong believers that we only get one planet and that it’s our responsibility to protect it. Therefore, we have started to work towards a zero waste to landfill strategy that ensures that all of your waste is dealt with in the most environmentally friendly way possible.
Why Is Recycling So Important?
According to a report from the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, the UK generated 221 million tonnes of total waste in 2016. However, a report from 2018 states that only 45% of household waste is recycled. That means that an incredibly large amount of waste that isn’t being recycled or repurposed for other things. With landfill being one of the most common end points for this excess waste, the negative consequences will only continue to grow.
Landfill sites can cause a variety of issues for the environment. Consequences include, but are not limited to the following:
- Bad odours
- Pest Infestations
- Eyesore
- Toxins
- Greenhouse Gases
- Leachate
Whereas none of the consequences are very pleasant, the three that are the worst for the environment are those at the bottom of that list. For example, toxins leach into the soil and groundwater surrounding landfill sites from toxic waste such as televisions and computers. Over time, as rainwater filters through the landfill, it creates a foul smelling substance called leachate. This is packed full of ammonia and various toxic salts making it dangerous to the surrounding groundwater and soil. In addition to all of this, landfill sites are also huge sources of methane, one of the most dangerous greenhouse gases causing global warming.
