What can’t you put in a skip- and where should you dispose of these items?

Skips are suitable for a wide range of waste products, but there are still some items to look out for that require specialist disposal. So what can’t you put in a skip, and how should you dispose of these items instead? 

Top Items That Can’t Be Put In A Skip

Asbestos 

Depending on the nature of the asbestos you need to dispose of, a specialist contractor might need to be contacted, alternatively, we can sometimes provide specialist skips for asbestos disposal, but you should not under any circumstances dispose of asbestos in an ordinary skip. 

Televisions 

Televisions can contain harmful chemicals that need to be specially and safely dealt with by professionals. Rather than disposing of an old TV in your skip, you should take it to your local recycling centre, or, why not see if any local electronics shops will recycle it for you. Alternatively, if it’s still in working order, why not see if you can sell it on to someone looking for a second hand TV! 

Batteries

Batteries shouldn’t be thrown away with your household waste, or disposed of in a skip. Instead, they should be disposed of in battery banks, which can often be found in supermarkets and leisure centres, so that they can be removed and recycled by the local authority. 

Alternatively, you can request a battery bag from your local authority, once the bag is full of used batteries this can be left out with your bins, and when they’re collected the local authority will also take the battery bag and leave you with a new one. 

Medical waste

Medical waste should not be disposed of in a skip, instead you should contact your local authority and request a clinical waste collection. 

Fluorescent tubes and lightbulbs 

Fluorescent tubes and some light bulbs shouldn’t be disposed of in a skip, instead you should take them to your local recycling centre for safe disposal. 

Electrical appliances and fridges/ freezers 

Electrical appliances and fridges shouldn’t be disposed of in a skip. Often shops will offer to collect and dispose of your unwanted electricals when they deliver your new ones, so it’s always worth checking whether this is a possibility. Alternatively, you can take them to your local recycling centre, and find out if your local authority can arrange collection for bulkier items. 

Gas cylinders

Gas cylinders should not be disposed of in a skip, instead you should find out whether you can return the cylinders to the company they came from. Where this isn’t possible, you can take them to your local recycling centre. 

Tyres

Tyres should not be disposed of in a skip, instead you should take them to your local recycling centre for disposal. 

Chemicals and pesticides

Chemicals and pesticides should not be disposed of in a skip, instead you should contact your local authority, to see if they, or any other local authorities close to you, offer a hazardous waste disposal service.
